Triton 1/600 Ancient Galleys range of white metal waterline models. Manufactured by Skytrex Ltd. Loughborough, UK.
The galley or oared fighting ship was used predominantly in the Mediterranean by the Greeks and their Successors, the Phoenicians, Romans and Carthaginians. Tactics varied – the Ancient Greeks preferred tactically outmanoeuvring their opponents and ramming them, the Romans preferred to convert the sea battles to a form of land warfare by using a boarding ramp called a corvus. Therefore the number of fighting men (marines) as opposed to oarsmen (normally slaves) vary considerably from nationality to nationality. These models would be suitable for use with DBM rules and its successors and also specifically designed sets for Ancient Naval conflict available from a number of publishers.
