Armies at First Manassas and Introduction to Combat Arms by Scott Bowden. Published by Empire Games Press, Arlington, Texas, USA. © 1988 Scott Bowden. ISBN 0 913037 08 7
39 page paperback book (8” x 9”). This booklet comes from the Armies of the American Civil War Research Series and is Volume 1 of that series.
I’m not sure how many volumes Scott Bowden completed but two others are included on the information page: Armies at Gettysburg and Armies at Chickamauga and Chattanooga.
I think this book is mistitled as the Introduction to Combat Arms is the first and much longer section (25 pages long) and includes a map of Barksdale’s Charge at Gettysburg. It describes the infantry, artillery and cavalry of the Union and Confederate Armies with organisational schemes, tactical practices, and an extensive discussion of the different types of artillery and their availability and usage. Most importantly, this introduction makes it easy to understand the combatants of the American Civil War and how they fought.
The Battle at First Manassas is 6 pages long followed by a battle map and the last section of the book has the complete order of battle for First Manassas annotated for use with the Empire Press “Stars’n’Bars” rules.
There is minor scuffing to the cover and page edges and a crease to the top left corner of the back cover (this has not affected any of the inside pages). The binding is secure and all internal content is clean and legible. the picture shown is representative of the title and is not necessarily of the copy offered here for sale.Number in stock: 1
