Costume Society Extra Series No 3. Working Class Costume 1818 from Sketches of Characters by William Johnstone White 1818. Edited by Pamela Clabburn. Published by the Costume Society c/o The Department of Textiles, Victoria and Albert Museum, London SW7. © Pamela Clabburn 1971.
Paperback booklet (13.8cm x 21.6cm) with 4 pages of Introduction followed by a facsimile reprint of the original 1818 booklet which consists of 28 monochrome plates taken from a set of etchings by W. J. White. These are followed by brief notes on the plates and an Appendix. The title page of the original volume includes the following information:
Sketches of characters consisting of whole length portraits with picturesque or topographical backgrounds illustrative of the Counties of Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Middlesex.
This booklet of civilian dress from the early nineteenth century would be of most use to theatrical costume designers, re-enactment societies and students of fashion, but would also have some value to diorama modellers of the late Napoleonic period.
Apart from some minor marks to the cover and a little discolouration of the page edges the condition is as new.
