Bakers 1580-1660 by Stuart Peachey. Published by Stuart Press as part of the Living History Reference Books series. First edition 1998. © Historical Management Associates Ltd. 1998 ISBN 1 85804 115 5
32 page A5 booklet with a small number of contemporary illustrations. The following is extracted from the Introduction:
“This brief work is not intended to provide details of the baker’s trade at this period which has already been covered in several of our other publications, but rather to look at the possessions and lifestyle of bakers – primarily by using details of their possessions and homes from probate inventories.
In the period covered by this booklet when anyone died, if they had possessions, other than freehold property, worth over £5 an inventory had to be made. These inventories were often made by groups of friends, neighbours and relatives, many of whom were often illiterate. Over 600 of these inventories survive only seven of which specify that the deceased was a baker or white baker. Several of these inventories are included in their entirety giving an interesting social glimpse of the period.”
New and unused.
